These Sour Patch Grapes go by a bunch of different names on Pinterest including Glitter Grapes, Candied Grapes, Frosted Grapes and of course the way I refer to them, as Sour Patch Grapes. Any way you cut it, they’re tart and sweet and delicious!

All my life I have been a HUGE fan of Sour Patch Kids and sour candy in general. I’m such a fan of them that I had started buying them in bulk and then switched to bulk but individually wrapped packages so I don’t eat a huge handful!

The tart and sweet flavors are a favorite and given a choice between a bowl of sour candy and ANY other dessert (ok 99% of other desserts) I would choose the bowl of sour candy. So when I stumbled across this idea on Pinterest I had high hopes that I was trying to keep in check while I sent my husband out for ingredients.

I knew I was going to work with my own flavors and recreate the original mix, but I wasn’t prepared for us to all gather around the bowl eating them with reckless abandon. I think the bowl lasted about two minutes flat. But can you blame us when they look like this?!

I chose Jolly Rancher Green Apple, Jolly Rancher Watermelon (I can’t do cherry or strawberry jello ever again after the hospital stay when I had my youngest. Red jello is officially not a part of my diet ever again!), Jello Lemon and Jello Orange.

You can of course use any flavors of jello that you want, but the idea here was to capture the flavors of the candies and the colors. I have also tried other flavors with awesome success.  They’re DELICIOUS! And since originally making this post, we’ve made them frozen too. They’re perfect for the summer when frozen.

The directions are super simple but I will tell you there are many different ways to accomplish the same thing here.

  1. Use my method with toothpicks (more details below)
  2. Rinse the grapes, put them in a ziploc back and pour desired flavor in, seal and shake
  3. Roll each grape through the mix by hand after rinsing.

Each method has positives and negatives:

  1. Cons:My method takes longer than the others and uses toothpicks. Positive: Beautiful, even coverage, no messy hands.
  2. Cons: Messy uneven coverage, no beautiful presentation. Positive: Done in literally seconds.
  3. Cons: Messy hands, imperfect coverage, still takes a heck of a long time, if not as long as mine. Positives: Prettier than #2

Here is my method (I used toothpicks since I had a box of 1000 laying around not being used). Take one bowl of freshly washed green grapes and a small bowl of water. (Foam dinosaurs optional)

Poke a toothpick in through the spot where the stem was attached. Using toothpick, dip in water and roll in mix that is in a tilted bowl for easy rolling.

Let the grapes stay on the toothpicks until the liquid is dried and they have formed a crust of sweet and sour magic.

Put in fridge for as long as it takes to chill them completely. I also froze a few to test, I will update my post in the morning about how good they are! Once they are fully chilled you can easily remove the toothpicks.

Repeat the steps with each individual flavor, you can choose any flavors you’d like, I chose mine to mimic the colors of original Sour Patch Kids. Once they’ve dried, serve it up in a bowl and watch your toddler (if you happen to have one handy) say “wooooooowwwwwwwwww” over and over again!

  1. It states39 calories per serving g but does not say what that serving size is. Can you please share that? Thank you!! These look amazing!!

  2. When you say 1/3 box of the Jolly Rancher, do you mean the packets?
I can’t wait to try this recipe but I’m just confused about the amount of the Jolly Rancher drink mix.. Thank you!!

  3. These are beautiful! I wonder how well they would do shipping them to my family over the holidays.. what do you think?

    1. I don’t think it’ll work. They’re pretty delicate and I would think the jostling from shipping wouldn’t allow it to arrive in good shape. Sorry. You’ll just have to make your family come to you, haha! Happy Holidays.

    1. I haven’t used them myself, they are pretty sweet on their own would be my own caution. But if you try it out, I’d love to hear how they turned out!

  4. At the front of the article it says “with only two ingredients,” but the recipe calls for more of that.

    1. What a fun idea! Here is my gut reaction: The strawberries and apples would release too many liquids and the tangerine skin (if not removed) would not adhere. If removed it would also release too much liquids.

  5. So I did the hardest way, using a toothpick and it didn’t work. It wouldn’t cover, and the few spots that did, were ugly bumps!

    1. Michelle, I have been making these for years. What type of jello mix did you use? I have had hiccups before too.

However if you think of it like battering something, it’s helpful. Try the water dip repeat method a few times to get a beautiful sugary coating.

  6. I absolutely adore this recipe since finding it! I LOVE sour candy and always feel guilty for eating it. For those looking for an extra sour kick (I know I did), add some citric acid to the jello powder. Just a sprinkle of CA will do as it’s very tart. I had some Citric Acid on hand because I use it for preserving/canning vegetables. You can usually find it in the preserving section of your local target or Walmart. Hope this tip helps those of you looking for your sour fix!

  7. I tried these because my kids love sour patch kids, but my kids didn’t like these.  They just tasted like sugary powder on the outside.  The look beautiful but we didn’t like them.

  8. Love this idea, we are having a Watermelon theme party for my 1 yr old granddaughter next month, I am going to try green and watermelon colors and arrange in a bowl to look like watermelon.

  9. Our Dillons didn’t have many Jolly Rancher flavors, but I went with a Jello Brand Berry Blue and it was by far our favorite! We also tried lemon, orange, cherry and Jolly Rancher Green Apple, and the best were Green Apple and Berry Blue. If we make again, will probably just use those flavors!

  10. So much fun and easy !!! I used red grapes because of the resveratrol in the skin. Blue raspberry gelatin would be tasty. This recipe is great thanks for sharing it!!

    1. I’ve never tried it so I can’t really say but as long as it has the same powdery consistency, I would think it would still work. Obviously, the taste will be a bit different because of being sugar free. Let me know if you decide to try.

      1. I use sugar free jello. You have to use more jello packets because there is way less powder in the sugar free packs.
        I like them 🙂

    1. I don’t think it would with them being already frozen. I would suggest just dipping your frozen grapes into the mix and treat it like FunDip, haha!

  11. What a cute, quick, easy and unique recipe! This is great for parties and I love the comments about VODKA. I’d be lying if I wasn’t already thinking the same!

  12. Planning to make these for my two-year-old’s birthday party this weekend. I saw you said they keep in the fridge in an airtight container for almost a week. Did you use a shallow container or is a deep one fine. I’m worried about them getting mushy and stuck together. Thanks for the idea. We’re going for a space themed party and my daughter will love eating these sparkly little “planets.”

    1. Such a cute party idea!! We ate them so fast so the container was smaller because there weren’t many left. My suggestion would be to place parchment or wax paper between the layers if you’re using a larger container. That might help to maintain the coating and ensure they don’t get squished.

  13. So as I’m sitting here eating my way through a bag of Jolly Rancher’s, I’m thinking I need to try these!!!

  14. The jello powder wasn’t sour at all unfortunately 🙁 so I added some citric acid powder… lol that soooooo solved it. Oh and frozen works great! I actually did this the first time with frozen because I ALWAYS have a huge bag of frozen grapes in my freezer and they get kinda sticky during the freezing process so it helps the coating stick and you can eat them frozen right away!

  15. These look super good! Gonna try them today 🙂 how long do they keep in the freezer? Not that i’m expecting them to last long or anything … 😉

    1. We’ve kept them in there for a few weeks. For testing, haha. Usually they’re gone in a day or two!

  16. Didn’t see the update about how the frozen grapes turned out. Are they better in the fridge of the freezer?

  17. So glad I came across this awesome idea. My grandson asked me the other day if we could make sour candy. Since we are trying to keep him off candy, thisvis an excellent alternative. Making them this week with him.

  18. It would be interesting to try this with Cotton Candy grapes. I love them frozen! Guess I’ll have to wait until August to o try those also.

  19. I am so going to try this with blueberries and serve them frozen! I’m so excited about this!! Thank you for the idea!!

  20. Wow!!!! I tried these with my boyfriend’s son this weekend. Talk about an instant hit! Even my boyfriend loved him- he said this is the most genious “healthy” snack he’s seen. Thanks so much for such an amazing idea!!!

  21. I tried the toothpick method but couldn’t get the jello mix to stick like you did. Any suggestions

    1. Was it patchy or just didn’t stick at all? I might try freezing the grapes a bit before rolling them in the mix (might make them a bit more firm to help with rolling in the mix). You also want to make sure your grape is completely wet before rolling and because the grape is more firm, apply a bit more pressure when rolling it to ensure it gets a good “stick”. If you want to trouble shoot more, feel free to email me at contact @ dev.dinnerthendessert.com

  22. I have a question….do u mix any of these together? If not, how do u get the sweet and the sour in one grape? Is the grape the sweet n each of the mixes r all sour! Would like to màke these with a little one next week over spring break.

    1. You could mix them but I’ve found the the tartness of the jello mix with the sweet of the grape is the perfect combination for that sweet and sour taste. Enjoy!!

  23. I have tried this ten times, frozen grapes, refrigerated grapes, warm grapes. The jello either doesnt stick or sets and then gets mushy what is the Secret?????

    1. Sorry this comment took so long to get to, it ended up in my spam filter somehow! You may be using too much water. Dip the grapes (room temp or fridge temp is fine), let excess water drip off then roll slowly. If you see it soak through the jello quickly its too wet. As you roll it you should see where the powder doesn’t soak through immediately. Then refrigerate until it completely dries out. I’m confused about the sets then gets mushy though, if you want we can troubleshoot via email too? contact @ dev.dinnerthendessert.com

      1. HI!
I was wondering how much sugar is in these?
I made small snack bags for my kids,
I did 1 tbsp of the powder and 10 grapes.

How much sugar is in the 1 tbsp??
        Thanks!!!!

        1. Sorry, I’m not sure how much sugar is in these. You could probably look at the back of the package and just divide it by how much you’re using to get a ballpark idea.

  24. how do you make your blog so popular I have hade mine for two years and my friends and family only know about it

  25. This is absolutely brilliant! These look so incredibly yummy! The kids will love these 🙂

  26. I would like to add an alternate method. After rinsing the grapes in the colander, shake it a few times and pour the grapes onto a papertowel lined cookie sheet. Dry the colander well and pour the grapes back into it. Slowly sprinkle the jell-o over the grapes, stirring with a wooden spoon as you go. Remove the papertowels from the cookie sheet. Pour the grapes back onto the empty cookie sheet. Put in the freezer or refrigerator until chilled to desired temperature. Green grapes with pineapple jell-o is my favorite although the kids at our end of season lacrosse jamboree loved the TMNT booykasha berry and the watermelon jell-os on green grapes. Thank you for this amazing recipe!!!!

    1. Add a bit more water to the grapes and roll a bit slower. I promise if you do that you’ll see it stick really nicely and you can even sort of mold it into a perfect coating.

      1. This would be great for a child diabetic snack made with sugar free jello. I have 4 type one diabetics…..3 children. great idea…….wonder how I could transport them? Thank you.

        1. Thank you so much! I’ve never transported ours as they seem to quickly disappear before having a chance to even put them away, haha! My suggestion is probably keep them chilled in shallow type containers and transport them in a cooler depending on how long they’ll be out of the fridge. Let me know if how that works or if you came up with a better solution.

  27. Oh my gosh these look so good!!! I love grapes this would be a great way to add in some extra flavor for ithem!

        1. Yes! They are. The jello powder in its concentrated form is quite sour. It contains a form of citric acid (the sour stuff on sour patch kids) which is why in addition to the flavors, it tastes so similar 🙂

    1. I found them at the local Safeway, but worst case scenario they are on Amazon (for way more than I would want to pay though!)

  28. WHILE I Love your recipe idea is it wrong that I’m just as excited for the jolly rancher watermelon jello flavor? How did I miss that? I am going to the store right now as I have a bunch of grapes leftover from the New Years celebration and I can make them today!! Yay!

  29. I really like your method! Less mess is always a good thing! These look so yummy! The perfect snack. 🙂

  30. Just finished making a batch of these and OMG I LOVE THEM!!!!! My boyfriend is a huge sour patch kids fan so i made up a batch for him as a Christmas present! Thank you for sharing! 🙂

  31. These look great on the table with all my Christmas baking and will be used with a fruit tray Christmas Eve. Thanks.

  32. This looks Sooo awesome, I can’t wait to make them. Where does the sour flavor come from? Is it the green grapes that do the trick?

    1. The jello/jolly rancher powder and the green grapes. Tart from the grapes and sour from the powder 🙂 If you want a more muted flavor you can totally use red grapes instead and the only sour flavor will be the powder.

  33. These look beautiful, but I don’t understand what makes them sour. Is the Jolly Rancher gelatin a sweet/sour blend? If not, would Jello brand work? Thanks!

    1. Both Jello and Jolly Rancher work equally well, I just really like the flavors of Jolly Rancher. They both have sour to them. I hope you love it!

  34. How would you store them for later? Airtight container in fridge? I wouldn’t want to ruin them after all that work!

    1. That’s exactly what I did with the second batch. I stored them successfully for almost a week (this was a trial run to know how long they would last). You can also freeze them. They were DELICIOUS frozen!

  35. So.. I just gained 20lbs with the knowledge of this recipe!! Seriously.. This looks amazing .. I can’t wait to try it!!!

  36. Perfect time of the year for this recipe. Grapes are so good and on sale everywhere now. I love that they are so colorful.

  37. omg this is DANGEROUS! (or is it? maybe it’s better for me than the usual candy I nosh, haha!) I am ABSOLUTELY trying this out ASAP.

    1. Sour Patch Kids are basically my weakness. I LOVE sour candy. so these are a nice balance to the handfuls of sour candy!

  38. What a colourful bowl of magic, unfortunately I am unable to get the ingredients for this otherwise I would definitely be giving it a try, so much fun!

  39. I can’t get over how fun and playful these are! What a cool and different treat! And I bet yummy too!

  40. Are you serious! I LOoooooooVE Sour patches and literally have to stop myself from buying them on every grocery visit. I would definitely try them, these looks so cute and delicious. I can already feel the lemon, orange and green apple flavors 🙂

  41. OMG this is one of the cleverest ideas ever! I don’t know who would be more impatient to eat them, my nephews or me 🙂

  42. What a creative recipe! My kiddo has such a sweet tooth. This is such a great sneaky mom, get your kids to eat their fruits a vegetables trick!

  43. What a wonderfully fun idea! I’d love to make these with my daughter – she’d have a blast, although she might not be patient with the waiting part. 🙂

  44. This is awesome! My kids are going to freak out when I make this for them. They LOVE sour patch kids so I can’t wait to try this. THanks for sharing.

  45. What a fantastic idea!!! Frozen grapes and a crunchy coating, sounds scrumptious. I’m not a candy eater, but I could definitely go for these:)

  46. My mouth is seriously puckered and watering right now. lol. Sour Patch were one of my childhood favorites too (ok still are).

    1. It would be awesome if I had some right now! 🙂 I haven’t made them in a couple of weeks and now I am craving them again!

      1. Me too. (Randomly from Pinterest.) When I first started pinning, & pinning parties were “all the rage”?…. We tried basically this. Yours turned out MUch MUCH more beautiful, & I love the flavor combos. Why our brains didn’t go there, I’ll never know. You have re inspired me to try these! I know a certain little girl who can’t enjoy chewy candies, & will go nuts for this version!!! Thank you & can’t wait to try your toothpick method! ….maybe these will be my Easter contribution?

  47. As I was reading the recipe and looking at the pictures, my mouth started watering. LOL! I so want to try these.

  48. I’ve never heard of these before. Definitely sounds like a candy my family would love to try.

  49. Thanks for listing the pros and cons of each method! I have to say the results are beautiful! Fun for kids

    1. My pleasure Christie! I know mine had to look pretty but sometimes making it in 10 seconds for a gaggle of kids wins over beauty! Haha.

  50. My husband is a Sour Patch Kids fanatic, has to have them every time we go to the movies. He’d die a happy man if I made these for him!

  51. Oh wow. This made my mouth water. How awesome is this! I love all things sour, and I really love grapes. This would be great!

    1. Jeanine you should totally try them. I’m eating my way through the second batch of them right now (while saving about a dozen to test how long they keep for) and they are addicting. Also, I tried them frozen, they are amazing frozen too!

  52. I have a funny feeling I would score cool auntie points with this recipe! I love frozen fruit for summer! 🙂

  53. y kids love Sour Patch andy and they would really enjoy this snack. I didn’t know they made a jello!

    1. I know, right? My toddler woke up this morning saying “Mommy you want sparkly grapes?” and when I said no I was told “That’s okay Mommy, I eat them for you!”

  54. I am so impressed with this recipe. This would be perfect for a party table because they are so pretty and are surely a hit with kids and adults.

    1. Thanks Valerie! I’m making them again for my toddler’s birthday party coming up next month in theme appropriate colors.

  55. This is such a fun treat! I was always a fan of Sour Patch kids. This is a really cool way to make a healthier version.

  56. These do look amazing! They are so pretty. I will have to make them because I think we would all love them.

  57. These are too cute AND they look really good! I’m not much of a sweet fiend, but love fruit so this would be the perfect treat!

  58. These are on my summer bucket list to do with my kids. They look like something that my boys would love to help make and eat! Do you know how well they keep?

      1. This was my first question as I read this too! I ran across the article because I was looking for homemade green candies/desserts for a Grinch mason jar Christmas gift. Perhaps it will work if I refrigerate them and include those instructions on the jar?

        1. If you make them, let them dry out in the fridge then layer very carefully I think you’ll be fine! The thing is once they sit for a bit the moisture from the grapes will make the jello powder wet again and they’ll stick. But if it is short term I think you’ll be fine 🙂

  59. This is one of the best healthy alternative recipes I’ve seen. I love that you coated the grapes in candy. Now you get that great flavor without nearly as much sugar.

  60. This might be the single greatest thing I’ve ever seen on the web. I mean it’s genius. You get a little fruit. You get a little candy.

  61. This is such a great idea and it is yummy. I think my son will really like them he loves sour candy.

        1. I spritzed my grapes with a little lemon juice before putting the jello on, it adds a little more zing if you like sour things!

          1. Or you can buy food grade citric acid if tounlike the extra sour. Its very cheap online can get a few pounds for under $10. Then add however much you want 🙂

  62. Love this idea! I could use a bowl of these in front of me right now as I’m working. Might have to plan on that for tomorrow 😀

  63. Waiting for the update on the froze grapes. I love sour patch kid, but I also love frozen grapes. They look amazing!

    1. So my husband ate them this morning because that is what husbands do. He said they were great. So now I need to make more to try them myself!

      1. Good to know that frozen was good! I’m looking to do these this weekend for some college football tailgating. Have you ever tried vodka in stead of water?

        1. The vodka will evaporate quickly so it may not help the topping stick as well. But I do like your style and would LOVE to know if it works! Have you tried the vodka/gummy bear idea?
