Soups are a big part of the Fall season for us, with their instant “warm you up” abilities and ability to freeze portions or take portions for quickly heated lunches. We are constantly keeping out slow cookers going in the winter for soups, especially this Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup.

This recipe was made in partnership with Smithfield who also sponsored this post for amazing Black Pepper Bacon Biscuits that incidentally would go fabulously with this soup!

Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup that's creamy, full of vegetables and chunks of ham, finished off with milk and sour cream for a easy and delicious hearty soup. With less than 20 minutes of prep work (I chop vegetables while watching my favorite reality shows) your slow cooker is set and ready to go.

The Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup simmers away on its own, melting the vegetables into this delicious creamy base. A quick mash, a bit of heavy cream and sour cream and dinner is served!

The best part of slow cooker meals like this Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup is that they’re perfect for weeknights now that everyone is back to school or for those hearty meals you’re going to need after a day spent out at the soccer fields watching the little ones run around in a pattern that almost resembles soccer (we just started toddler soccer here… and oh boy).

This Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup can be ready, waiting for you to come home, peel off the grass covered uniforms and eat! Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup that's creamy, full of vegetables and chunks of ham, finished off with milk and sour cream for a easy and delicious hearty soup.

The Smithfield Anytime Favorites Hickory Smoked Cubed Ham used in this recipe was inspired by the flavors of Smithfield Ham which I grew up enjoy for holiday meals, but in really convenient packaging and in almost any cuts you could hope for which helps cut prep time drastically.

Tools Used in the making of this Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup:
Slow Cooker: Love this slow cooker and how programmable it is, it has been a workhorse for me… until…
My New Slow Cooker: This recipe was made in this slow cooker. For larger roasts I also brown the meat in the insert and not lose a bunch of the flavor by transferring the meat and leaving the browned bits behind. If you’re thinking of a new slow cooker, consider it if your budget is open.
Better Than Bouillon: I almost never buy boxes of broth because I keep the beef, chicken and vegetable version of this Better Than Bouillon.
Spice Rack – I buy spices in bulk from local grocers and from Penzey’s. It’s less expensive and significantly higher quality than buying the jars individually but I ended up being left with tons of little bags of spices. Enter the spice rack.

  1. I prepared this today in the crockpot and had it for dinner tonight. I made a recipe and a half. After reading other comments, I added a teaspoon of minced garlic and a can of corn. I also added shrimp! We topped it with shredded cheese. Delicious!

  2. I did not peel potatoes. I made dairy and gluten free. I used oat milk, plant based sour cream and Namaste Organic GF blend. I heated the milk and sour cream just a bit on the stove and added in the GF flour. Added it all to the crock pot together. It turned out amazing!!

  3. I have made this 4 times now and my family loves it. It has become a favorite. I did make a couple minor changes bc I thought it would be bland with just pepper. I added no salt bc the broth and ham are salty enough. I added 3 cloves of minced garlic and chopped up some fresh parsley and added it to the crock pot to simmer all day. I also added 2 bay leaves. That was it though. Just added some flavor.

  4. I’m making this on Saturday, but I know from the recipe and reviews that it will be five star! I do have one question though, do you make a slurry out of the flour, milk, and sour cream before adding it to the soup? TIA!

  5. My first time making a potato soup with ham.. I know, right? Lol:-) Didn’t have any celery but added a touch of celery salt, omitting any extra salt. Loved this simple but tasty recipe and will definitely make it again!!

      1. I’d start by sautéing the carrot, onion and celery. Then add the ham and potatoes and mix the flour through. Stir in the broth and allow it to come to a boil over medium high heat until the potatoes are tender. Reduce heat to medium low, add the heavy cream/milk and sour cream and stir until thickened. Enjoy!

  6. Amazing! This was a perfect hearty soup after a day of hiking in the cold. The entire family enjoyed it. Delicious ? added to our recipe binder. We will be making this again.

  7. I messed up I put the cream in with the chicken broth in the beginning and put it on high for 4 hours Is it going to be OK

  8. I have a question….I want to make this soup but I dont have an onion , i have a little bit of dried minced onion seasoning.. would that work ?

  9. Be prepared for your entire house to smell incredibly delicious after about 2 hours into this cooking in your crockpot!! We had to get a snack to stop ourselves from digging in before it was done. These reviews don’t lie – the soup is sooo good. Like other reviewers, I made a few of my own tweaks based on personal preference… added a can of sweet corn, which gave it just a touch of sweetness and crunch. Used a can of condensed milk because I didn’t have any heavy cream, and it was perfect. Added half a stick of butter, well, because it’s cream and potato based so why not lol. Added a dash of white wine and also a bit of fresh parsley and garlic. I’ve seriously never had such an incredible bowl of soup. Thank you, Sabrina for sharing this!

  10. Our new favorite soup! The first time I made it I wanted to share the leftovers with some neighbors but my hubby said, “NO… I want it!” It is absolutely delicious! Thank you so much for sharing this awesome recipe.

  11. Just wondering how big a serving is. The recipe says it makes 8 servings; but how big are the servings?

    Thank you!

      1. ??? If there’s 8 cups of potatoes in the recipe and it makes 8 servings, one serving includes a cup of potatoes plus 1/8 of all the other ingredients combined. Seems like this recipes makes quite a bit more than 8 one cup servings. Am I missing something?

        1. Things get soft and smaller when they cook…like when you make mashed potatoes…when you start you probably have a half filled pot…once they are mashed its considerably less

  12. I’m making this now and it smells soooo good! I subscribe to you and truly enjoy your recipes.

However I may have to stop. I’m prone to seizures and the multitude of ads and how they flash and zoom in and out is by far more than any other cooking blog

Is there any way I can get your story and recipes with less “zooming in and out” ?

  13. We make this at least once a month and it’s always delicious! Super easy recipe and the best ham and potato soup I’ve ever had! Thanks for sharing this gem ??
